My Discovery of Pyrography

Hello, Fireflies!

Welcome to the first edition of my blog. I would like to start by talking about my journey to pyrography, what drew me to the art, and why I continue burning. But first a little backstory...

Back Story

When I was a young girl I was always drawn to art- drawing, painting, origami, and jewelry making, to name a few. Like many young kids, these interests came and went pretty quickly. The one that remained the most was painting, to be honest, I wasn't that great at it, but I didn't care. There was just something about it. Mixing different colors together to see what combinations I could make and discovering which colors complement each other was such a thrill. It didn't really matter what I was painting, just as long I had my brush on the canvas. I wish I had the sense back then to take pictures of my creations so that I could share them with you.

Tragedy struck our family when I was 11 years old when my father passed away after a battle with Hepatitis C. Experiencing such a loss changed me to my core and forced me to grow up a lot faster than one would normally do at that age. My love for painting was one of those things that took a back seat to my grief for many, many years.

It wasn't until my 20s that I picked up the brush again. However, I couldn't devote much time to it with my new adult responsibilities. My friend Bernadette and I would get together whenever we would and have paint nights outside in her gazebo, surrounded by nature, canvas, paints, and our favorite treats!

Discovery

In February 2018, during one of our many crafting nights, Bernadette introduced me to pyrography. She had tried it on her own a few days before and thought I would like to give it a try, so she picked up another cheap solid tip burner and we had our first wood-burning night!

She had wood-burned a beautiful Celtic flower, while I wood-burned a Valentine's Day gift for my boyfriend. A heart with our names in the center and the year we began dating. (Which he loved!) I have always loved the great outdoors and anything to do with nature. Including bonfires during my family camping trips. The heat and smell of burning wood relaxed me and brought back fond memories of my father. Bernadette didn't continue wood burning, but she lit a fire in me - a love for this new craft.

Journey Continued

I wood-burned whenever I could, creating many pieces for gifts during birthdays and Christmas, and when the Covid 19 pandemic hit it was one of the only things to keep me grounded. Being an essential worker I had to go to work, and I would come home every day mentally and physically exhausted. Wood burning helped get me through that isolating time. After the pandemic, I started up my first wood-burning business, naming it Burntastic Creations. I learned a lot with my first business and burned several pieces for returning customers.

In June 2024 I decided to undergo a rebranding and changed my business name to Firefly Pyrography. Since then I have been focusing on networking to build my client base and marketing, and in September 2024 I completed my biggest order yet! 180 wedding favors!

2025 is a new year, and I look forward to creating even more beautiful pieces. Thank you for checking out my blog, please feel free to leave a comment below. If you are interested in having a piece burned you can reach me on my socials linked below or by emailing fireflypyrographymb@gmail.com
